THE BEST KEPT
SECRET IN DIVING
If you ask most recreational divers where the best American wreck diving is you'll get a lot of different answers ranging from the Great Lakes to the Florida Keys. Divers in the know will tell you that it's in the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Pompano Beach area of Florida. Located about 30 miles north of Miami, GFL has the same turquoise water, great food, and beautiful beaches as Miami but at a fraction of the cost. Throw in wrecks and reefs that rival the Florida Keys with some amazing shore dives and the Pompano-Fort Lauderdale area becomes one of the best kept secrets in diving.
That's why we'll be spending 5 days and 4 nights diving the wrecks in the area on a boat that will be exclusively divers from the Louisville Dive Center.
So what can you expect from the diving? Well, a little bit of everything. Since GFL is directly in the path of the gulf stream the wrecks and reefs in the area are filled with Caribbean corals and tropical marine life. The wrecks are an oasis of life teeming with angelfish, soft corals, and if you're lucky maybe a shark or two. They've been known to even see a great white on some of the wrecks (her name is Katherine.)
In addition to the wrecks GFL also has amazing drift diving, wall dives and shore diving galore which are all part of the what is known as South Florida Reef Tract.
Greater FORT LAUDERDALE DIVING
But really the biggest draw for us on this trip is the wrecks. Featuring dozens of artificial reefs and wreck there is something for every level of wreck diver from the newbie to the technical diver. A few highlights include;
The Okinawa, a 107' tug, sank as an artificial reef in 2017 sits upright and in great condition in only 70 feet. Combined with the warm water and great visiblity this is a great site to get introduced to Pompano wreck diving on.
The Captain Dan is a 175' Coast Guard tender that sits upright in 110' feet of water and absolutely is teeming with marine life. Whale sharks have been spotted multiple times on this wreck.
In addition to dozens of great wrecks there's amazing reefs with many of them swimming distance from the shore. Once the morning wreck dives are completed we'll have the opportunity to hit up some of these shore dives. It will be like having our own little bit of Bonaire right here in our own backyard.
