Search & Recovery Diver

This course is to provide the diver with the skills and knowledge to do those underwater tasks commonly needed by the experienced recreational diver and to minimize the risks of such tasks while searching for and recovering items that have been lost in the aquatic environment. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, provided the diving environment, activities, areas dived, and equipment approximate those of training.

In this course, you'll learn underwater navigation using natural and compass techniques, address the challenges and safety procedures related to limited visibility diving, and explore proper search methods and light salvage techniques, including rigging and knot tying.

All lines, lift bags, reels, etc. will be provided by the instructor.

Pre-requisites:

  • Open Water Scuba Diver, Junior Open Water Diver
  • Minimum age of 18 or 15 with parental consent

The NAUI or SDI Search and Recovery Diver Course covers:

  • Navigation Techniques: Compass use, estimating distances, and natural navigation
  • Limited Visibility Diving: Hazards, techniques, and factors affecting visibility
  • Search Methods: Shotgun, circular, grid, and current search techniques
  • Salvage Techniques: Depth considerations, lift bags, rigging, knots, and fill techniques
  • Silt/Mud Considerations: Addressing challenges in low-visibility conditions

Please note: A $100 rescheduling fee will apply to reschedules or no-shows made within 48 hours of the course.

Students are required to provide their own gear, or rent from the Louisville Dive Center at the student's expense.

Other required gear include: compass, computer, surface marker buoy.
